Caring For Your Ferret

Ferret care involves providing a balanced diet of high-quality protein, regular exercise, and appropriate medical attention, including annual vaccinations and parasite prevention, to keep them healthy and happy.

Ferrets are high-maintenance pocket pets:

  • Females must be neutered or they’ll stay in season until they’ve mated. This causes health problems ranging from alopecia (hair loss) to estrogen-associated anemia (deficiency in red blood cells) which can cause death.
  • They’re curious and lively by nature, so need a lot of room to play.
  • Don’t place their housing in direct sunlight. Ferrets can’t sweat and are therefore susceptible to heatstroke.
  • Ferrets require preventive medicine for the diseases they’re prone to such as rabies and canine distemper.
  • Fleas are common in ferrets and these can be transmitted from other ferrets and household pets.
